The most important factors in college admissions are already in effect well before senior year. Freshman and sophomore years are critical times for students to establish strong academic and extracurricular profiles, and junior year is of pivotal importance in showcasing curricular improvement and depth of participation in meaningful activities. Through strategic one-on-one sessions and small group workshops, our experienced counselors guide students on how to make the most of their high school experience. Over the course of a semester, multiple seasons, or years, students benefit from individualized attention and personalized advice to help them build their college-bound foundation. The Competitive Edge Counseling Program for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors includes:
The Competitive Edge Counseling Program strategically addresses all of the following key areas with students throughout their early years of high school.
Life Outside of the Classroom
Consistent and dedicated extracurricular involvement is one way in which a student can stand out in the eyes of the admissions officer. In addition to helping students understand the role of the extracurricular profile in the admissions process, we encourage thoughtful and authentic choices outside the classroom. Students research potential career and academic paths and learn how to use their time in high school to begin pursuing what interests them. We also advise students on selecting summer and year-round activities, jobs, classes, and internships, based on their current interests. To highlight extracurricular involvement to colleges and employers, we guide students through the process of writing a concise yet detailed resume.
Crossing the Academic Threshold
Getting into college is all about crossing the academic threshold, demonstrating the ability to succeed at an institute of higher learning. Admissions Academy advises students on building a strong curricular profile that will best communicate their academic potential and interests to colleges. We provide students with an overview of the SAT Reasoning, ACT, and SAT Subject exams, and our counselors ensure that students plan dates for all standardized tests throughout high school. Counselors also introduce students to essential time management and study skills, and students learn how to cultivate lasting relationships with their teachers, both inside and outside the classroom.
College Planning and Exploration
What is student life really like at that school you've heard so much about? What classes does an engineering major actually take? What does it mean to be pre-med? Setting college goals is critical to getting students on the right path during their high school years, and by giving them an accurate glimpse into the mind of an admissions officer, students begin to understand how to pursue their goals. We help students explore and conduct detailed research into their college options, and guide students through creating strategic college lists that fit their academic, extracurricular, and personal interests. We teach students how to ask questions and discover answers about college life, academic programs, and potential future interests so that the eventual application process is a culmination of their work, rather than a one-time event. Students also explore a variety of majors and career opportunities in order to develop their personal long-term goals successfully.
